General George Custer was still a young Lieutenant when this picture was taken on May 20th, 1862. The photograph, taken by James Gibson, was made of the staff of General Fitz-John Porter. Custer, an unknown junior officer, is seen with many of his contemporaries. Just a little more than one year after this picture was taken, Custer was promoted to Brigadier General and became known as the gallant young superstar of the Union Army.
