Brigadier General Custer, age 23, a few days prior to the start of Gettysburg. Two years later, on the same day that Lincoln died, he was promoted again to Major General. At the time this was the highest rank any officer (other than General Grant) could be promoted to in the Union Army.
He was 25 years old and present in the Appomattox Courthouse when General Lee surrendered to Grant and was presented with the signing table as a present to his wife from General Sheridan, who included a note praising his gallantry.
