04208 - Lewis Powell (a.k.a Payne); Lincoln Conspirator aboard USS Saugus, 1865 [LC-DIG-cwpb-04208]

Lewis Powell was the most photographed of the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators. At the time of his arrest, he was photographed wearing the hat and trench coat he wore during the attack on Secretary of State William Seward. Interestingly, the initial photographs of Powell were taken standing without shackles. Later, he poses sitting with shackles. After the initial photographs, his clothes were taken were submitted as evidence in his trial.

For the sake of security, the conspirators were held on the U.S.S. Montauk and Saugus, both monitor class warships. To replace his clothes, he was issued the clothes of an enlisted sailor with its distinctive blue undershirt and trousers. It can clearly be seen that this is the outfit he was wearing at the time of his hanging a few weeks later.
