By the end of the war, the South was no longer able to produce weapons in any quantity but it still possessed a rather formidable arsenal. Some of these weapons were captured by the South at the start of the war, some were actually purchased directly from the North prior to conflict and many were obtained from Europe by blockade runners. With little capacity to produce their own, each weapon became more and more valuable. By the end, vast stockpiles of arms were captured throughout the South.
