I10029 - General Spaatz and Colonel Tibbets
On August 6, 1945 Colonel Paul Tibbets was the pilot of the "Enola Gay" that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Upon returning to their base in Tinian General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz presented Colonel Tibbets with the Distinguished Service Cross (2nd highest U.S. Military decoration).
