02194 - A letter from home; 1st CT Heavy Artillery, Ft. Brady, VA, 1864 [LC-DIG-cwpb-02194]

While soldiers of today are often able to receive email when not in battle during the Civil War a letter from home was something to be cherished. Often the letters were read over and over and each paragraph, sentence a word may explored for new meanings.

It may be weeks or months between letters, even if they were written every day. Here we see one soldier reading the letter, are the others listening to him? They were all from the same unit in Connecticut, perhaps they knew the author or the home town? All we really know is that it is still important today for soldiers to hear of life back home as it was then.
