General John G. Foster - 00905
West Point graduate Foster had served in the Mexican War, taught engineering at West Point and was second in command at Ft. Sumter, S.C. during the 1861 surrender.
Tasked with defending North Carolina, Foster put his men to work strengthening the fortifications.
