German submarine attacks on U. S. shipping brought an end to American neutrality during World War I. At the time, it was a common for families to have Victory Gardens to grow food for the home front. Instead of the usual presidential pets of dogs or cats, Wilson's White House boasted a small flock of sheep. The sheep, Wilson's gift to his wife Edith, both trimmed the White House grass and provided wool. The "White House wool" raised almost $100,000 for the Red Cross at auction.
For his efforts in ending World War I and creating the League of Nations, a precursor to the United Nations, Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1920.
