The USS PAWNEE was a Steam sloop of war. Launched in 1859, it was an interesting combination of both steam and sail power. In the picture, her rigging for the sails can clearly be seen, as well as a portion of the funnel for the steam engine.

In 1861 Lincoln sent the PAWNEE to Ft. Sumter to relieve Major Anderson. Due to a storm, the PAWNEE arrived to find that the fort had already surrendered.
