01702 - Gen. Burnside-Matthew Brady; Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 11 1862 [LC-DIG-cwpb-01703]
General Ambrose Burnside (holding newspaper) is probably most remembered today as the origin for the term Sideburns.
On November 7, 1862 he replaced McClellan as Commander of the Army of the Potomac after failing to catch Lee. In December he offered to resign, but was refused. One month later he again pursued Lee and again offered to resign. This time it was accepted.
