02570 - Resting atop fortifications; Ft. Sedgwick before Petersburg, April 1865 (LC-DIG-cwpb-02570)
"I expend about 100 rounds of ammunition every day, and the picket and sharpshooters pour in such a continuous storm of bullets that the said fort is anything but an agreeable place," US gunner.
Fort Sedgwick aka "Fort Hell" was located about 200 feet from the pickets of CS Ft Mahone, Petersburg, Va. Both troops were constantly firing shots at each other. After the fall of Petersburg, men can be seen relaxing on top of the traverses, constructed of gabions (wicker baskets) filled with dirt & rocks.
