The USS Commodore Perry was built originally as a ferry boat in New York in 1859. Its shallow draft and ability to navigate close to shore made it the ideal type of vessel for the river and coastal defenses used by the Navy during the war. Acquired by the Navy in October of 1861, she was armed with two 9 inch guns and two 32 pound smooth bores as well as a 12 pound howitzer. With 125 men aboard, she could make her way along the coastal waterways and be used as both a deterrent to Southern shipping, as well as support of Union positions with her artillery.
