02492 - Richmond, VA; 1865; Confederate brass mountain howitzers [LC-DIG-cwpb-02492]
With the fall of the Richmond in April 1865 the North suddenly found themselves in possession of large numbers of Confederate artillery. Perhaps this had been intended for the defense of Richmond, or destined for some future battle that was never fought, but either way the North had to maintain control of these weapons. Literally hundreds, if not thousands were captured in the Richmond area alone. With such abundance of weapons most were made useless and sold for scrap. Some may have been returned for service in the Union army, but with manufacturing quality suffering in the South, it is unlikely that these weapons were used again.
