In the fall of 1864, Sherman had taken, but not yet burned, Atlanta. Here he is seen at one of the many federal forts riding his prized horse, Lexington.
Not long after this picture, Sherman ordered the railways destroyed, as part of the departure on the march to the sea. Ultimately this caused the burning of Atlanta and forever blighted Sherman's name in the south.
