March 30, 1943 - Patton had been promoted to Lieutenant General only two weeks earlier following the U.S. disaster at the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia.
To try and turn things around for the demoralized troops, Eisenhower had relieved the commander and replaced him with Patton along with Omar Bradley as his second in command.
