NPG_81_M1_D3 - Abraham Lincoln
We digitally repaired the “crack” in the “cracked-plate” photo of President Abraham Lincoln.
On Sunday, February 5, 1865, Lincoln with his son Tad, walked over to Alexander Gardner’s Photography Studio for his very last photo session.
This image was one of the fourteen taken of Lincoln that day.
Perhaps the cracked occurred while the glass-plate negative was heated to receive a coat of varnish. Gardner made a single print and then discarded the damaged plate.
Lincoln’s assassination, two months later, gives this image it’s undeniable prophetic power.
