01359 - Giant Sling Cart; Used in removing the captured artillery [LC-DIG-cwpb-01359]
Without the soldier in the picture it would be hard to realize that the wheels are nearly 10 feet tall! This could be considered the tow truck, or 18 wheeler of its day.
Basically an oversized wagon frame, it was used to remove captured guns from Confederate forts so that they could not be reused. Two of these monsters would be linked together with a large cannon suspended underneath. It was necessary to have such large wheels to keep the gun from dragging on the ground.
