"Freedom from Want" by Norman Rockwell in 3D

Saturday Evening Post Cover: March 6, 1943

Size of Original: 35.5” W X 45.75” H

Location of Original: Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge

Another of the popular Four Freedom series, this painting is one of the best loved and most recognized of all Rockwell images. Many parodies and takeoffs have been made of it over the years.

The model for the grandmother serving the turkey is Mrs. Thaddeus Wheaton who was the Rockwell family cook. It was painted on Thanksgiving Day 1942. As Rockwell stated “I painted the turkey in “Freedom from Want” on Thanksgiving Day. Mrs Wheaton, our cook, cooked it, I painted it and we ate it.”

Rockwell was worried that the image would convey overabundance and greed instead of just “Freedom from Want”.
