Mary Whalen was the model for this painting. She was one of Rockwell’s favorite models as she could act and take on many expressions and she could hold poses for a long time.
With Rockwell’s usual attention to detail, there is a picture of Ava Gardiner is in the girl’s lap amd a discarded doll to the side of the mirror. The whole scene suggests a girl leaving childhood interests and becoming a woman.
