Size of Original: 29.5” W X 31.5” H

Location of Original: Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge

Mary Whalen was the model for this painting. She was one of Rockwell’s favorite models as she could act and take on many expressions and she could hold poses for a long time.

With Rockwell’s usual attention to detail, there is a picture of Ava Gardiner is in the girl’s lap amd a discarded doll to the side of the mirror. The whole scene suggests a girl leaving childhood interests and becoming a woman.
